Birds fly south when everything freezes over. Lovers go their separate ways when their love burns out. Stories get forgotten when they stop getting told.
When my dad and I used to drive to the lake, he’d think out loud while we listened to Pink Floyd and smoked Marlboro Lights out the window. He spoke about life and everything that comes with it—love, loss, pain, and a shot at redemption.
Baby birds leave the nest, and most of them never return. Some of them fall from the sky only to land in the cuckoo’s nest. Some find their wings again, and some get their wings clipped, forever locked in the cage of their own mind.
Forrest Gump found the love of his life, and then lost it in the blink of an eye. You can do everything right and still lose the thing that matters most. Living means surviving the end of many lives that weren’t meant to last. And life doesn’t wait for you to understand. Find your legs and keep it moving.
You can forget your mother tongue when you have no one to speak it with. You can also forget how to love when there’s no one there to tell you those three sacred words in return.
It’s crazy how much time—how unbelievably much time—slips by when you aren’t paying attention. And every year drifts away like the birds when winter comes.
Birds fly south when everything freezes over. Lovers go their separate ways when their love grows cold. Stories get forgotten when they stop getting told. My dad smoked Marlboro Lights when he thought about the past.
